Boat ramps, piers, jetties and other marine infrastructure across Victoria have been closed to recreational boating as part of the State’s effort to slow the spread of COVID-19.

The closures were announced by Forest Fire Management Victoria and include privately-run infrastructure and follow the closure of caravan parks and camping grounds at the end March.

“Easter is usually a very busy time on our waterways, but this year is different,” the Agency said.

“Recreational boating can put you and other Victorians at risk,” it said.

“It can also put unnecessary extra pressure on emergency services and search and rescue volunteers during these challenging times.”

The Agency said recreational boating included canoeing; kayaking; surf skiing; stand up paddle boarding; rowing; jet skiing and all other powered boating; as well as yachting, windsurfing, kitesurfing and all wind-powered boating.

“Authorised officers will ask anyone out on the water for recreation to head home,” it said.

“Victoria Police can issue on the spot fines of $1,652 to individuals who refuse to follow the public health directions.”

Forest Fire Management Victoria reminded Victorians that there were only four reasons to be out in public: shopping for food and essential supplies; medical care or compassionate needs; exercise; as well as work and study if it couldn’t be done remotely.
