The Department of Health has launched a national text message campaign to educate the community on the steps it can take to protect itself from COVID-19.
Endorsed by Chief Medical Officer, Brendan Murphy, the message is to read: “Coronavirus Aus Gov msg: To stop the spread, stay 1.5m from others, follow rules on social gatherings, wash hands, stay home if sick. aus.gov.au.”
The Department said nearly 36 million messages would be sent to mobile phone users over the coming days, with support from Telstra, Optus and Vodafone.
Professor Murphy said every Australian needed to do their bit and understand how serious the health crisis was.
“As the spread of the coronavirus increases, it’s vital every Australian understands the practical action they must take to look after themselves and help us protect those most at risk,” Professor Murphy said.
“Australians should follow the simple actions to stop the spread of coronavirus – be at least 1.5 metres away from everyone; if you’re sick, stay at home; wash hands and do it often; cough or sneeze into your elbow and not your hands and don’t touch your face at all, even if it itches.”
He said these measures would help stop the spread of the virus and protect lives.
“Staying away from others is not the Australian way of life but it’s essential to our future and how we overcome Coronavirus,” Professor Murphy said.
