The Environment, Planning and Sustainable Development Directorate has announced that the 2020-2021 round of its ACT Environment Grants program is now open to applicants.
The Directorate said this year’s program would incorporate an additional funding stream to increase investment in the program from $218,000 to a total of $285,000, with grants of up to $35,000 available to environmentally-minded Canberran groups and individuals.
“ACT Environment Grants provide financial support to implement community-based projects that care for the environment and strengthen people’s connection to nature,” the Directorate said.
“The additional funding will help local groups and individuals enhance ecosystem health and function within the urban built environment and will help support the long-term objectives of a sustainable and resilient city,” it said.
“This will encourage the community to conserve and enhance Canberra’s urban and parks landscape through project ideas that helps care for, restore and rehabilitate Canberra’s natural environment.”
It said the grants program was initiated in 1996 and since that time had supported more than 261 projects with almost $4 million in funding.
The Directorate said a recent independent review survey found that grant recipients emphasised the importance of the opportunities created by the program.
“Engaging community energy and enthusiasm through the grants program is a proven way to assist Canberra’s fantastic natural resources,” it said.
The 2020–2021 ACT Environment Grants program will close at midnight on Tuesday 28 April.
