The Department of Environment and Science (DES) has confirmed the reopening of some sections of Moreton Island to visitors and campers following the recent wildfires.
Queensland Parks and Wildlife Services (QPWS) officers had closed all camping areas on Moreton Island and QPWS-managed roads north of Middle Road while emergency services attended to fires.
Reopened campgrounds include Ben Ewa camping area, The Wrecks camping area, south-east camping zone and south-west camping zone. All other camping areas remain closed.
Following assessment by QPWS officers, roads which have been reopened include Middle Road, Tangalooma Bypass, Cowan Bypass, Harper track to Cape Moreton and Desert track.
The DES reminded visitors to observe all signage, barriers and directions from rangers and in particular to comply with prohibited entry signage which is displayed in prominent positions.
“Camping bookings affected by recent closures, or anyone seeking to change bookings, obtain refunds or system credits, can do so by visiting the online booking system,” the Department said in a statement.
Anyone visiting the island is asked to stay up to date with QFES bushfire warnings which will be posted online.
