The Office of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs (ATSIA) is to provide $15,000 to the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD) for 25 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders places in AICD’s Governance Development Workshop to be run in February 2020.

Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs, Rachel Stephen-Smith said she wanted to ensure Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members had the opportunity to develop their skills, with a view to increasing their participation on boards and as Directors of organisations.

Ms Stephen-Smith said the Governance Development Workshop would introduce the role of the director and the board in establishing governance of an organisation.

She said it would outline the duties, responsibilities and rights of directors of private, public and not-for-profit organisations and the roles of various regulatory bodies.

The workshop, to be held in February 2020 is part of AICD’s Foundations of Directorship for Indigenous Organisations course.

Participants will become AICD members upon successful completion of the course.

Ms Stephen-Smith has called for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members – especially those who are involved in community-controlled organisations – to apply for the workshop.

Expressions of interest close on 9 December and more information is available at this PS News link.
