National Recycling Week is well underway in the ACT with a range of events and activities being held to encourage waste minimisation.

The Minister for Recycling and Waste Reduction, Chris Steel encouraged all Canberrans to explore the events taking place during the week which runs to Sunday (17 November).

“In the wake of changes to the global recycling industry, how we manage our waste is more important than ever,” Mr Steel said.

“National Recycling Week is a fantastic opportunity to showcase how we encourage recycling and reduce our waste in the ACT,” he said.

“Get involved and be inspired by stories of innovation – go behind the scenes at recycling facilities and find out what you can do to reduce, reuse and recycle.”

Mr Steel said that throughout the week residents could visit the sustainable packaging exhibition in the Canberra Centre; book behind-the-scene tours at facilities such as the Recycling Discovery Hub, Soft Landing Mattress Recycling and Capital Brewing Co; receive tips from Thor’s Hammer craftspeople on working with recycled timber; and take part in a composting workshop.

“The Design-out Waste exhibition in the Canberra Centre explores the impact of consumerism and showcases examples of sustainable packaging across the globe,” the Minister said.

He said the World of Waste sculpture, led by local artist Rachel Develin in collaboration with students from across the ACT, was also on show at the exhibition.

“It is made from discarded materials and explores the impact of our waste,” Mr Steel said.
