Sporting organisations in NSW are being encouraged to apply for funding to promote mental good health through their sporting initiatives.
Minister for Mental Health, Bronnie Taylor has urged sporting bodies wanting to improve mental health and wellbeing in regional drought-stricken areas to apply for a share of a new $1.2 million Mental Health Sports Fund.
“Sporting clubs are the heart of our rural communities and this fund will assist NSW sporting bodies to work with local clubs to deliver mental health and wellbeing initiatives which suit the needs of local people,” Mrs Taylor said.
“We are hoping a diverse range of sporting codes will apply to promote mental health, and start important conversations in regional areas battling this tough drought,” she said.
“Collectively, sporting clubs have thousands of members across regional NSW and are a great vehicle to promote mental health and wellbeing.”
Mrs Taylor said the Mental Health Sports Fund was open to funding applications from 11 November.
Acting Minister for Sport, Geoff Lee said NSW sporting bodies could apply for funding to expand an existing program, team-up with a mental health service provider on a new program or support their local member clubs to run community wellbeing events.
Mr Lee said the fund was a wonderful opportunity for sports organisations to support the drought effort and help build resilience in rural communities.
