MALAYSIA

Malaysian Prime Minister, Dr Mahathir Mohamad (pictured) has moved to reassure current Public Servants that they will receive a pension on retirement.

Speaking in Parliament, Dr Mahathir said that while the Government was looking at replacing the scheme in future, “when a person works for the Government, he enters into an agreement with the Government and we cannot disregard this agreement”.

Earlier, Dr Mahathir admitted the Government was facing a challenge to support pension benefits, which had ballooned to MYR23.9 billion (A$8.3 billion) last year from MYR5.9 billion (A$2 billion) in 2006.

He said the Government was forced to look at several mechanisms to replace the pension scheme.

Meanwhile, the Democratic Action Party (DAP) in Sarawak has proposed that the State’s public transportation system be acquired by the Government.

The left-of-centre party, which is part of the Government Coalition, said the move would improve the regularity and standard of bus services.

At its annual party congress, the DAP passed a number of resolutions urging the Government to adhere to the principles of transparency, fairness and good governance by introducing a Freedom of Information Ordinance to grant public access to information on Government decisions.

The DAP also urged the State Government not to take an antagonistic stand towards the Federal Government so the latter could effectively implement projects in the State.
