A Geoscience Australia report on possible sources of hydrogen around Australia has revealed that every State and Territory has the potential for future hydrogen production.
In its report, Prospective Hydrogen Production Regions of Australia, Geoscience Australia (GA) produces maps showing more than 200,000 square kilometres of land rated as highly prospective for supporting renewable hydrogen production.
GA was engaged by the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science, on behalf of the National Hydrogen Taskforce, to develop the maps.
Minister for Resources and Northern Australia, Senator Matt Canavan said Australia could be a world leader in supplying hydrogen to other nations.
“We have the resources, know-how, infrastructure and research base to produce and supply clean hydrogen to the world, and this report shows every Australian State and Territory has regions with excellent prospects for hydrogen production,” Senator Canavan said.
He said he had signed a Letter of Intent indicating Australia would collaborate with South Korea and develop a Hydrogen Action Plan by the end of this year.
The Minister was on a trade mission to South Korea when he released the GA report.
“I’ll be using my time here to promote our outstanding potential as a hydrogen supplier with the South Korean Government and company executives,” Senator Canavan said.
“I’ll explain how Australia has been investing heavily in hydrogen projects and outline our National Hydrogen Strategy,” he said.
Australia’s National Hydrogen Strategy is expected to be released by the end of 2019 with GA’s 64-page report accessible at this PS News link.
