Canberra is playing host to a team of up-and-coming Indigenous leaders this week to sharpen their leadership skills and for them to learn how to work with Government to drive change.

Part of the Jawun Emerging Leaders Program, the eight participants are taking part in an immersive three-day experience involving a Government Masterclass designed to expose emerging leaders to Government decision and policy-making.

Minister for Indigenous Australians, Ken Wyatt said the Jawun Emerging Leaders Program built confidence in the future generation of leaders through relevant experiences and exposure to community, corporate and Government.

“The program equips them with the skills to advance social and economic outcomes for Indigenous Australians,” Mr Wyatt said.

“By seeing how change can happen from the inside out, our future leaders strengthen their ability to work across sectors and leverage networks to make a real difference.”

He said the masterclass was the third of four thematic masterclasses complemented by immersion sessions in inner Sydney, the West Kimberley and North East.

“The program focuses on a critical theme while providing knowledge and experience to drive change; highly attuned leadership skills, and access to networks and opportunities across sectors and regions,” Mr Wyatt said.

“The 2019 theme of How Enterprise and Economic Development is Leading to Empowerment puts a focus on how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people can build capacity and deliver long-term benefits through business or services.”

He said the program also built life-long connections that would help future leaders create lasting positive impacts in their regions and communities.
