Parliament House in Canberra is to host its first-ever night-time behind-the-scenes event for the public in September.
Dubbed People, Power, Politics: Parliament After Dark, the event is aimed at members of the public who want to know more about Parliament and the myths often associated with it.
According to the organisers, visitors will get experience the parliamentary process and find out more about where the real decisions are made.
They said participants will learn how a Bill is navigated through Parliament and how some ideas become law while others never get off the drawing board.
The event is based on the regular visits the Parliamentary Education Office hosts for school children, where they are taken behind the scenes to see how Parliament works.
“However, this one is designed for over 18s — hence the wine and cheese offering at the end,” the organisers said.
“The aim is for people interested in politics, students of the subject, Public Servants — anyone interested in how democracy works — to be guided by expert staff.
“Participants are invited to come alone or in groups to enjoy an evening that will be both entertaining and informative. “
The event will be held on two Thursdays — 12 and 19 September — with admission $30 ($25 for students).
For security purposes, all participants will be required to present photo identification and ticket confirmation to join any behind-the-scenes tours or events. Participants failing to produce photo ID may be unable to participate.
