A new memorial wall has been established in Canberra to commemorate fire and emergency services personnel who have lost their lives protecting the community.
Unveiling the wall, the Minister for Law Enforcement and Cyber Security, Angus Taylor said Australians honoured the courage and contribution of the 505 members of the fire and emergency services community whose names were etched in the wall.
“We also acknowledge the families, colleagues and loved ones who have endured such painful and tragic losses, whose personal sacrifice is immeasurable,” Mr Taylor said.
“Already this year we have seen tropical cyclones Nora, Marcus and Gita devastate communities in Australia and New Zealand, while storms, floods and bushfires continue to test our resolve across the country.”
Mr Taylor, whose portfolio includes Emergency Management, said the nation’s ability to respond to challenges was largely thanks to the tireless and selfless efforts of Australia and New Zealand’s 300,000-strong fire and emergency services workforce.
“This memorial wall serves as a place of remembrance and reflection, honouring those who have lost their lives, as well as paying tribute to those who continue to serve,” he said.
Located at the National Emergency Service Memorial in Canberra, the wall was jointly funded by the Australian Government and the National Council for Fire and Emergency Services in Australia and New Zealand.
