WorkSafe ACT has launched a program of auditing and educating members of the construction industry on safety and compliance practices when using precast concrete panels.
Announced by the Minister for Employment and Workplace Safety, Rachel Stephen-Smith, the audit is in response to recent incidents in which precast concrete panels have collapsed due to inappropriate installation.
Ms Stephen-Smith said WorkSafe ACT inspectors had commenced the audit of Canberra worksites to determine industry safety performance.
She said inspectors were visiting both commercial and residential sites ranging in operation size.
“The audit will focus on and identify current levels of compliance for safety when using precast concrete panels,” Ms Stephen-Smith said.
“WorkSafe ACT inspectors will also provide advice to workers and site managers on the health and safety risks involved to themselves, their colleagues and the public.”
She said the use of precast concrete panels was a high-risk activity and that the panels should only be manufactured, transported, erected and altered by a qualified person as defined under Work Health and Safety Regulation 2011.
“The collapse of any concrete panel, even a small one, can have catastrophic consequences for workers and the public,” she said.
“Outcomes from the audit and education program will ensure future safety operations and practices for using precast concrete panels are informed by evidence and best practice,” Ms Stephen-Smith said.
