The Department of the Environment and Energy’s Threatened Species Commissioner has launched a Threatened Species Bake-Off to build awareness about Australia’s threatened wildlife species.
Speaking at the launch, the Commissioner, Sally Box (pictured) said the annual bake-off was an invitation to Australians to bake a dessert in the shape of a threatened species to commemorate Threatened Species Day on 7 September.
Dr Box said the event aimed to build awareness in the community about Australia’s remarkable and unique threatened wildlife.
“I’m delighted to launch this year’s bake-off and to help judge the incredible threatened plant and animal submissions,” Dr Box said.
“I am also looking forward to my four children baking me another threatened species birthday cake this year.”
She urged participants to use their baking skills, produce a baked product in the shape of their chosen Australian native threatened species and share it with her on social media.
“Upload an image of your baked goods to Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram by using the hashtag #TSBakeOff and tag the Threatened Species Commissioner,” Dr Box said.
“Schools are encouraged to submit their entry along with a short video or 100-word description on why their threatened species is important to their school or region.”
She said entries should be in by Monday 9 September with the winners announced on 12 September and the winning entries displayed on social media as well as on her webpage.
