Two Canberra architecture students have been awarded the first Alastair Swayn Internships under a program established with the University of Canberra (UC).

Professor Swayn (pictured) was the inaugural ACT Government Architect. He died in 2016.

Masters of Architecture students at UC, Daniel Schorn and Cornelius Pau have received the internships.

Minister for Planning and Land Management, Mick Gentleman said the pair would now get to undertake a research assignment within the Government and receive mentorship from ACT Government Architect, Catherine Townsend.

Mr Gentleman said he hoped this would support them to design great buildings that would add to Canberra’s future skyline.

“They will also receive a $2,500 research grant from the Alastair Swayn Foundation on assignment completion, which includes the opportunity for publication,” Mr Gentleman said.

He said Professor Swayn was a prominent Canberra architect and founding partner of the multi-award-winning architectural practice, Daryl Jackson Alastair Swayn.

He was a Professorial Fellow at UC and a founding sponsor and Director of the Gallery of Australian Design, which has been renamed The Swayn in his honour.

Mr Gentleman said that after his death, the Government made the commitment to support the establishment of an internship program to enable young, emerging architects to work with the Government in honour of Professor Swayne’s many contributions.

“The Alastair Swayn Internship Program is a joint initiative between the ACT Government, University of Canberra and the Alastair Swayn Foundation,” the Minister said.
