Police drive advice to motorists

Car drivers are being reminded to remove valuables and secure their vehicles following a number of vehicle break-ins and thefts.

In a statement, ACT Policing said vehicle break-ins were opportunistic crimes and there were a number of steps owners could take to limit the chances of their car being broken into.

They said drivers should always ensure their car was locked and secure with windows and sunroof closed.

“Do not leave any valuables in your car,” they said.

“Wallets, phones, satnavs and other electronic devices are what thieves are after. Sporting equipment (including bikes and golf clubs) and power tools are also regularly stolen,”

“Remove credit cards, driver’s licences and registration papers from the glove box.”

The police urged people who had a garage to use it rather than leaving their car in the driveway or on the street.

“If you have to leave it outside, if possible park in a well-lit area,” they said.

“Always take your car keys with you, and when at home leave them in a secure place. Spare keys or garage remotes should never be hidden in or on the car.”

The police said drivers should not place their names, addresses or registration numbers on keys.

“If you go away without your car, either take your keys with you or leave them with a neighbour or friend,” they said.

“Never leave the keys in plain sight in your house when you are not there.”
