Minister for Planning and Land Management, Mick Gentleman is to rename Belconnen’s William Slim Drive in the wake of a review of place names in the ACT.
Announcing his decision, Mr Gentleman said the change followed allegations made to the Government following the recent Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse.
“The Government is ensuring that commemoration of people through our roads, parks and public places is consistent with a modern, inclusive and progressive Canberra,” Mr Gentleman said.
“I intend to rename William Slim Drive following careful consideration including allegations made to the ACT Government, and a submission made by the Slim family.”
He said he had asked the Place Names Committee for further advice on the process and new naming options and he expected to formally rename the road on completion of its duplication.
“I have decided to keep the name of Haig Park and install new signage telling the contested history of Field Marshal Haig’s wartime legacy,” Mr Gentleman said.
“This will recognise differing views and help inform discussion around Australia’s experience in World War I.”
He said the review of place names also recommended the committee have processes to ensure place names met community standards and suggested improved avenues for community input into the place naming process.
“I have agreed to all recommendations put forward in the review and have requested that they be implemented within the next 12 months,” the Minister said.
