The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) has launched a special website to mark Privacy Awareness Week 2018.

The theme of this year’s Week, which runs from 13 to 19 May, is Privacy: From Principles to Practice, focusing on the need for organisations to develop and reassess systems, processes, culture and practice to make sure they put their customers’ personal information first.

Acting Australian Information Commissioner and Acting Privacy Commissioner, Angelene Falk (pictured) said the website emphasised that privacy was about people.

Ms Falk said the site hosted a range of downloadable promotional supplies, links to resources for businesses and individuals and information on the Week’s events.

“As 2018 marks the thirtieth anniversary of the Privacy Act 1988, this year’s website features a 30-year timeline highlighting 10 key moments in the history of the Act,” Ms Falk said.

“Throughout this Week, we encourage Australian organisations to review and improve how they handle personal information to ensure they are transparent and accountable, in line with community expectations and legislative requirements.”

She said her office was also asking people to think about how much had changed in the past 30 years.

“Remember when your phone was only used to make calls?” she asked.

“However, it is not just technology, pop and fashion that has evolved — privacy has as well.”

Ms falk said this could be measured by the “1988 to now” comparison social icons on the new website.
