Community Protection Medallists with Minister and senior leaders

The recipients of the 2019 ACT Community Protection Medals have been announced by the Minister for Police and Emergency Services, Mick Gentleman.

Mr Gentleman said the five members of the emergency services had gone “above and beyond” in their chosen fields and Canberra was lucky to have them.

“I thank the recipients, along with all of our first responders, for their dedication to the community and their major contribution towards making the ACT a safer, better place to live,” Mr Gentleman said.

The recipients are:

Brooke Turner (ACT Rural Fire Service) for sustained and diligent service as a volunteer with the ACT Rural Fire Service and her contribution to positive change in community engagement initiatives;

Gordon McAlpine (ACT State Emergency Service) in recognition of his 20 years of sustained and diligent service to the ACT and for outstanding service in leadership, management and coordination;

Commander Patrick Brennan (ACT Fire and Rescue) for outstanding service to the ACT community through sustained efforts to improve firefighting training, as well as the provision of improved fire safety outcomes for staff and inmates at the Alexander Maconochie Centre;

Detective Sergeant John Giles (ACT Policing – pictured) for diligent and outstanding service to the ACT community in establishing a registered charity, Kids in Care, as a way for him to continue giving to the ACT community beyond the requirements of a Police Officer; and

Stuart Barnetson (ACT Ambulance Service) for distinguished service to the ACT community as an Intensive Care Paramedic, and in particular for his contribution to the ACT Ambulance Service Clinical Advisory Committee.
