Simple call from Ombudsman

The Small Business Ombudsman, Kate Carnell (pictured) has called for simplification of workplace relations for small business.

Mrs Carnell released a position paper tackling the “overly complex” workplace relations system for small businesses.

“The legislation is far too complicated for the majority of Australian businesses with less than 20 employees and no expert HR or legal departments,” Mrs Carnell said.

ATO opens at Gosford

The new Australian Taxation Office (ATO) office in Gosford, NSW has been officially opened.

The building will also house the National Disability Insurance Agency, on the lower ground floor.

The ATO office has opened with more than 300 staff with the number expected to reach 600 over the next year.

ATO said the office will perform a variety of activities, including customer service and advice, dispute resolution and various corporate functions.


FSANZ urges pomegranate check

Consumers who purchased 180 g Creative Gourmet frozen pomegranates from Coles supermarkets have been reminded to destroy any remaining product or return it for a refund.

A statement from Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) said the product had a possible link with hepatitis A.

It said that while the product had been recalled, consumers might still have it in their freezers without being aware of the recall.

To date, nine cases of hepatitis A had been linked to the product.


Taskforce extended

A taskforce established to protect migrant workers from workplace exploitation is to have an extra six months to complete its duties.

The extension was sought by the Chair of the Migrants’ Taskforce, Professor Allan Fels.

The taskforce will now provide its final report to the Government in late 2018.
