The Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) has signed two Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) in the past week with like-minded nuclear organisations in Thailand and Canada.

Manager of International Affairs at ANSTO, Mark Alexander said international agreements were an important part of ANSTO’s mandate to share nuclear expertise and collaborate on research areas of common interest.

“In this case, it was nuclear organisations from two different parts of the globe that see alignments with our work in the peaceful use of nuclear technology,” Mr Alexander said.

He said a 10-member delegation from the Thailand Institute of Nuclear Technology (TINT) visited ANSTO’s NSW campuses at Lucas Heights and Camperdown before signing the MoU.

He said the agreement would enable both organisations to strengthen the cooperative program in nuclear science and technology in areas including environmental science, radioactive waste management, and research reactor operation.

Executive Director of TINT, Pornthep Nisamaneephong (pictured right) signed the agreement with Chief Executive of ANSTO, Adi Paterson.

Representatives of Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd (AECL) also signed an MoU with Dr Paterson.

Mr Alexander said the second MoU was wide-ranging, reflecting AECL and ANSTO’s leading roles and wide interests across the nuclear industry.

“Discussions have already identified a number of areas of potential mutual collaboration, including sharing experiences on obtaining resources for nuclear infrastructure, risk management benchmarking, and collaboration on decommissioning and decontamination,” he said.
