Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) has launched a review of food safety standards in the Food Standards Code and has published an information paper setting out its proposed approach.
Chief Executive of FSANZ, Mark Booth said the review would ensure there was a consistent and up-to-date approach to food safety management in Australia.
“The review will focus on the requirements for food safety management in the food service sector and closely related retail sectors, and the potential development of a primary production and processing standard for high-risk horticulture products to introduce requirements to manage food safety on-farm,” Mr Booth said.
“In addition, FSANZ will consider new technologies that have developed since the original standards were developed.”
He said FSANZ was expecting to prepare a number of proposals to progress the work and there would be consultation opportunities during the proposal process.
“I encourage all stakeholders to comment on the proposed scope and approach of the review by 31 May,” Mr Booth said.
FSANZ is responsible for developing, varying and reviewing standards for food available in Australia and New Zealand.
It also conducts a range of other functions including coordinating national food surveillance and recall systems, conducting research, assessing policies about imported food and developing codes of practice with industry.
