The men’s shed at Weston Creek has opened its new premises at the former Parks and Gardens depot in Bangalay Crescent, Rivett.

The group has moved from a tin shed in the grounds of the Eternity Church in Sulwood Drive, Kambah.

Minister for Community Services and Facilities, Chris Steel said that since its original opening in 2014, the Men’s Shed has been an integral part of the Weston Creek community.

“It provides a safe and welcoming space for men to participate and socialise with other men, while supporting them to get active and involved,” Mr Steel said.

“At the same time, the Men’s Shed enhances the health and wellbeing of retirees and older members of the community.”

He said the population of Weston Creek was the oldest in Canberra with a median age of 41 compared with the median age for Woden Valley and the Inner South generally at 39.

“The ACT Government is proud to give back to our citizens by providing low cost accommodation, through ACT Property Group, for community organisations like these,” Mr Steel said.

“The Men’s Shed in Weston Creek currently has around 30 members and is open Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.”

He said $80,000 had also been allocated for construction of a new Men’s Shed in Woden at Hughes, with tenders for the project closed and an announcement due to be made shortly.
