Ideas called to get people more physical

ACT Sport and Recreation has has issued a call to individuals or organisations with ideas for helping more people take part in sport, recreation or physical activities to apply for Government funding.

Minister for Sport and Recreation, Yvette Berry said the Participation Innovation Fund will allocate $200,000 in support for up to four initiatives designed to get more Canberrans participating in physical activity and engaged with the local community.

“Canberra is a sports loving city, with great facilities, open spaces and a history of many athletes and teams achieving great things both nationally and internationally,” Ms Berry said.

“While the ACT is largely very active, there are still pockets of the community that remain underrepresented, both in sports and general physical activities.”

She said statistics showed that only 65 per cent of Canberrans were active more than three times a week, while participation data consistently showed girls tended to move away from sport in their teens.

“Frequent participation (three or more times a week) is notably reduced for disadvantaged households, people with a disability, families with children under 15 or households that speak a language other than English at home,” Ms Berry said.

“Sport offers a vehicle to improve gender equality, break cultural barriers, and improve social outcomes for the community.”

She said proposals from the public to change this did not need to be confined to sport, but would have to outline how the project responded directly to community needs and to demonstrate how community members would be engaged.
