Indigenous 16 on track for scholarships

The Education Directorate has presented 16 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students with scholarships to help them further their studies in their various fields.

The Directorate administers two scholarship programs for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in ACT public schools. The total cost of the programs is $155,000.

The Secondary Scholarship Program (scholarship holders pictured) is for students in Years 11 and 12 interested in a career in teaching, the health field or undertaking vocational qualification.

The Tertiary Scholarship Program is for students enrolled in teaching or an approved health course at a local ACT university.

In all cases the scholarships are provided to assist students in the costs associated with their studies.

This year’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Secondary Scholarship recipients are: Claudia Maruca (Gungahlin College), Lara Troy-O’Leary (Melba Copland Secondary School), Elijah Duke ( Canberra College), Tahlia Jard (Canberra College), Leilani Keen-Church (Lake Tuggeranong College), Duane Best ( Erindale College), Brett Davis (Erindale College), Ruby Watson (Dickson College), Yullara Reed (Dickson College), Jackson Houng (Dickson College) and Maliyan Gilbert ( Dickson College).

Tertiary Scholarship recipients are: Nyingari Little, Jordan Griffen, Courtney James, Lily Coleman, and Karina Hopkins, all recipients in the tertiary section are from the University of Canberra.
