Victoria’s Labor Government has begun a trial of new digital birth certificates in three local government areas (LGAs), providing new parents with swift and secure access to their child’s documentation on their mobile devices.

Minister for Government Services Danny Pearson announced the trial of the certificates at an early learning centre in Point Cook, presenting the digital certificate as an alternative to paper versions.

Participating parents across the three councils can now use their digital certificates to smooth the pathway to enrolling their children in kindergarten programs.

“The digital birth certificate will make it quicker and easier for Victorian parents to enrol their kids into kinder,” Mr Pearson said.

“This means you will have access to this important document anytime, wherever you are — which is one less thing to worry about.

“This is all part of our digitisation agenda — updating how government works so that Victorians can use services more easily and more efficiently.”

Parents can add their child’s birth certificate to the wallet feature on the Service Victoria app.

The move is another step towards creating more readily available digital services in the state, making it easier for Victorians to engage with organisations such as schools, kindergartens and hospitals.

The digital birth certificate will be optional for those eligible, and physical copies will continue to be issued to all Victorians.

Service Victoria’s digital wallet now features many documents that Victorians need, such as the Seniors Card, Veterans Card, digital driver’s licence and more.

The trial is officially active, meaning that parents in the three participating LGAs can log in and access their new digital certificate today.

Member for Point Cook Mathew Hilakari said: “I encourage families in Point Cook and Wyndham to get involved in this trial, which is making it easier for parents to enrol kids into kinder and to safely keep birth certificates.”
