Major construction milestones have been reached in Perth’s new Women and Babies Hospital, with piling works underway.
Three 120-tonne rigs will bore about 420 foundation piles, each 1.2 metres in diameter and between 16 and 24 metres deep.
About 2000 cubic metres of concrete will be used for 149 foundation piles bored at depths between 14 and 21 metres on the western carpark site.
These piles will support the structure of the hospital itself and the western carpark. Concrete foundations and above-ground structures will be built for the hospital and the carpark.
The start of piling works marks a milestone in the construction of the hospital, which aims to expand the care and choices for women, families and babies across the state.
“Our government is delivering WA’s biggest-ever hospital building program, including a brand-new Women and Babies Hospital,” Health Infrastructure Minister John Carey said.
“The start of piling for the new Women and Babies Hospital marks a major step forward in delivering state-of-the-art healthcare facilities for women, newborns and families.”
The 12-storey hospital within the Fiona Stanley precinct will include:
- Outpatient clinics
- A neonatal unit for newborns in need of specialised care
- A family birthing centre
- Operating theatres
- Inpatient facilities for maternity and gynaecology patients.
The project, valued at $1.8 billion, is being delivered by Webuild and includes a large expansion of the Osborne Park Hospital to provide improved services for women in the northern suburbs of Perth.
The new six-storey western carpark at the Fiona Stanley Hospital is being constructed at the intersection of Winch Way and Jennalup Street by Georgiou Group.
This addition to the hospital’s infrastructure will provide about 1500 staff parking bays and include a second-level footbridge linking it to a neighbouring carpark.
Additional carparking spaces will be key to fostering the growth of the Fiona Stanley Hospital precinct as the new Women and Babies Hospital takes shape.
A second multi-deck carpark within the precinct is also planned.
During the construction of these parking areas, workers at Fiona Stanley Hospital can use three temporary carparks.
“By consolidating parking and improving access, we’re ensuring the Fiona Stanley Hospital precinct is future-proofed so it can continue to serve the community and its staff as it grows,” Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said.
“The new multi-deck staff carpark will provide around 1500 parking bays and will be supported by local road changes on Jennalup Street and Winch Way once completed in mid-2027.”
