The South Australian Government has appointed Peter Meere as the inaugural leader of the state’s Office for AI, following a national search for a suitable candidate.
Characterised as an experienced leader in the public sector, Mr Meere will drive the state’s strategic adoption of AI to deliver value to the public.
The director’s role is to ensure that AI is used safely, effectively and ethically across the public service to improve government services, support the workforce and strengthen economic growth.
Government statements about Mr Meere’s appointment cite his experience in navigating complex policy landscapes and reshaping public programs to deliver reform for the state.
“Peter is an accomplished leader, and I am delighted to have his support and expertise as we continue to grow the public sector’s capacity in AI,” Assistant Minister to the Premier Michael Brown said.
Mr Meere was recently at the head of the Department of Education’s policy response to AI, delivering a “nation-leading” approach that balanced the innovative use of the technology responsibly and safely to create a positive impact on the state’s schools.
“Peter’s decades of experience in innovation and change within the sector, along with his deep insights into the challenges faced by both technology companies and government departments, will be invaluable as we accelerate forward,” Mr Brown said.
Mr Meere previously held senior roles in the Federal Government Attorney-General’s Department, the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, and the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety.
