The Malinauskas Government in South Australia is celebrating the delivery of one of its election commitments – new SA Housing Trust homes and the rejuvenation of existing public housing.
The final slabs have been poured at the public housing sites at Ingle Farm, putting them on track for completion by 2026. Built by Urban Concept, the homes at Ingle Farm are the last to be built as part of the election target of 1090 homes by 2026.
They have been built under the $232.7 million Public Housing Improvement Program and other programs that provide housing to South Australians.
The South Australian Labor Government has called it the first net increase in public housing stock in a generation.
Of the new public homes promised, 909 will be in metropolitan Adelaide, while 184 will be in the regions. Every home pledged during the election is either complete or under construction.
“These milestones are a testament to our commitment to provide quality, affordable housing for those who need it most,” Minister for Housing and Urban Development Nick Champion said.
Some 37 South Australian companies have been contracted to build the homes, with further support and business being provided to local tradespeople.
In addition to new construction, the government has been repairing existing homes under the Housing Trust, expediting the completion of major works on 350 vacant homes. Renovations are now complete on all 350, with each one tenanted.
The government’s announcement included comments from current Housing Trust tenants, such as Rob Snider.
“My new home is just so lovely,” he said.
“I could not be more grateful to the trust and I am so thankful for the opportunity it has given me to raise children I care for in the same safety and security I enjoyed growing up.
“I was able to grow up with my own family, secure in our trust home, until I moved on to other things in life.”
