The Water Cooler: Comings and goings in the public service

A breakdown of the latest appointments in the Australian Public Service, the wider public sector and across the public services of the states and territories.

APS Senior Executive Service

Band 1

Matthew Tolley has been appointed as branch manager for the National Indigenous Australians Agency.

William Vuong has been named as a senior executive lawyer in the Australian Government Solicitor.

David Holtkamp has been appointed as Assistant Commissioner for Strategic Partnerships and Analysis at the Australian Taxation Office.

Nicola Campion has been appointed as an Assistant Secretary in the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

Band 2

Lesa Craswell has been appointed as Executive Director of Audit Services in the Australian National Audit Office (ANAO).

Other Federal Appointments

Sussan Ley and Ted O'Brien

In the wake of the Coalition’s 3 May election defeat, Sussan Ley has been appointed as the new leader of the Federal Liberal Party replacing Peter Dutton who lost his seat of Dickson in the election. Ted O’Brien has been elected as deputy leader.

Senator Larissa Waters has been elected as the new leader of the Australian Greens, replacing former leader Adam Bandt who lost his seat of Melbourne in the 3 May federal election. Senator Mehreen Faruqi has retained the deputy leadership, while Senator Sarah Hanson-Young stays as the Greens manager of business.

States and Territories

ACT Magistrate Robert Cook has announced he is stepping down after 12 years in the position.

The NSW Government has appointed Anthony Howell and Alison McRobert as Commissioners to the Industrial Relations Commission of New South Wales (IRC), effective from June 2025.

Andrew Crisp has been appointed as the next Board Chair of Ambulance Victoria. Mr Crisp joined the Ambulance Victoria board as a Director in June 2024 and has been acting as interim CEO since last August.

Jordan Emery will be the new CEO of Ambulance Victoria from 30 June 2025.

Andrew Wadham has been appointed as a new Magistrate of the WA Magistrates Court, effective 19 May 2025.

Stuart Knowles has been appointed as the Territory Coordinator for the Northern Territory. Mr Knowles has been acting in the role since November 2024, and his tenure will last until 2029.
