A new online resource to support victims and witnesses of crime has been developed by the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions (CDPP) in response to recommendations of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse.
Launched by Attorney General, Christian Porter (pictured), the Victims and Witnesses site has been designed to demystify the prosecution process by using plain English and simple graphics that can be instantly translated into more than 100 different languages.
Mr Porter said the site was a tailored communication channel that also provided information about the support services available to vulnerable victims and witnesses of crime, including the victims and witnesses of child sexual abuse.
“While the CDPP has provided specific information for victims and witnesses on its website for a number of years, in response to the recommendations of the Royal Commission, it undertook a formal review of this material and how it was presented,” Mr Porter said.
“This is the result of the review.”
“The service highlights the need to keep the needs of victims in mind when prosecuting crimes against vulnerable people.”
He said victims of crime, particularly sexual abuse, needed every support possible to help them through the prosecution process to ensure the justice system did not compound the trauma of the original crime.
