It was a simple statement, but it teased, intrigued and instilled a certain impatience to get extra clues. Now, what was that about “taking the opportunity to unwind with spectacular uninterrupted views of Roebuck Bay and the magnificent ‘staircase to the moon”’?

Well, after a $4 million refurbishment of Moonlight Bay Suites, Broome, visitors will surely be heading to this Kimberley coastal town on Roebuck Bay, in Western Australia. Right outside the resort is the ideal position with unparalleled views overlooking the Indian Ocean to experience the “amazing natural phenomenon” that is the staircase to the moon, which traditionally occurs only a couple of times a month – from March to October. It happens when the rising of the moon is reflected off the exposed mudflats on the Broome coastline at extremely low tide, creating an illusion of stairs reaching up to the moon. That is spectacular!

Furthermore, the four-star, 50-room property’s complete makeover has taken all the one- and two-bedroom suites to a new level of comfort that’s ideal for families and couples, with self-contained, state-of-the-art accommodation for all budget ranges.

To mark the occasion, Moonlight Bay Suites is offering special accommodation price packages for Broome’s 2025 high season, from 1 May to 30 September.

Marketing manager Jessie Peirson-Jones speaks highly of what the resort and many nearby tourist attractions offer.

“We pride ourselves on being the best location to truly soak up the local Broome culture, where that is the phenomenon that is the ‘staircase to the moon’ right outside our doorstep or just strolling across to the award-winning Matso’s Broome microbrewery, located just next door, which serves locally crafted beers and delicious cuisine,” Ms Peirson-Jones said.

“Any visit to Broome would not be complete without the unique camel sunset rides along Cable Beach Club. Or perhaps a hovercraft tour along the Roebuck Bay coastline to discover dinosaur prints at Gantheaume Point and view the wrecks of the WWII flying boats – with many experiences only a short stroll from Moonlight Bay Suites.”

For a true escape in Western Australia’s tropical north, stay at the Moonlight Bay Suites, Broome. It’s surrounded by landscaped gardens that include a 28-metre swimming pool with spa overlooking Roebuck Bay.

The unmatched location sees guests within only a stroll of Broome’s famous eateries and venues, such as Matso’s Broome Brewery and the Cable Beach House restaurant — overlooking the pristine 22-kilometre stretch of white sand and coastline of Cable Beach. As there is no restaurant at Moonlight Bay Suites, Matso’s (which will reopen after renovations in April) is just across the road for a delivery.

Once the largest pearling port in the world, Broome in the late 1880s saw the boom of the pearling industry, which is now a major drawcard to the Kimberley coastal town. Tourists can experience the rich and culturally diverse pearling history with sea tours and the annual Shinju Matsuri.

Broome is also home to the famous Sun Pictures theatre, the oldest operating outdoor cinema in the world, located in the historic Chinatown precinct, within only a short stroll of Moonlight Bay Suites.

Broome is famous for its pearling history and Indigenous heritage, which continues to resonate throughout the town today. You get a different perspective of Cable Beach, a magical location, sitting high astride a camel while it walks rhythmically in time with the camel train. Powdery white sand, fluorescent blue waters and a rich and healthy ocean life that is a must-visit. All this, and beyond, is its heart and soul!

You can avail yourself of the price reductions on the fully self-contained, spacious suites for the Broome high season if you book direct and stay three nights or more. A 10 per cent discount will apply on all bookings:

  • One-bedroom suite, from $440 per night
