Director: Donovan Marsh, Roadshow Entertainment.

Cast: Gerard Butler, Gary Oldman, Common, Michael Nyqvist.

“Extremely entertaining” it may be, but Hunter Killer also gives the opportunity to get acquainted with some special segments in this Blu-ray viewing of a top-secret search mission.

American submarine Captain Joe Glass (Butler) is working deep under the Arctic Ocean on the hunt for a U.S. submarine in distress. At the same time, he discovers a secret Russian coup is in the offing, threatening to dismantle the world order.

In order to stop World War III, Glass must now assemble an elite group of Navy SEALs to rescue the kidnapped Russian president and sneak through enemy waters.

A battle has to be started to stop a war.

Two senior officials are at odds with how to proceed with the operation. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Charles Donnegan (Oscar-winner Oldman) and Rear-Admiral John Fisk (Common) have to contend with edgy exchanges.

A Cold War is imminent as Glass’ ship may need to defend itself. Russia’s rogue leader could command the charge unless someone rescues the deposed Russian president.

A complex character, Glass is almost mechanical in his intentions, showing no feeling in his choices. While he’s the one being sympathetic and fighting to save lives, his crew display all the emotions — happiness, fear, panic, uncertainty.

Some similarities can be found with Gerard’s ‘Fallen’ roles. In spirit, Hunter Killer shares some likeness to London Has Fallen and Olympus Has Fallen.
