ACT Policing is targeting speeding motorists in February.
Officer in Charge of Traffic Operations, Acting Station Sergeant David Wills said that with an average of 358 Traffic Infringement Notices (TINs) issued per month in 2018, or just under 12 a day, motorists were warned that if they exceeded the speed limits they could be issued infringements that incurred substantial financial penalties and demerit points.
During the Christmas and New Year double-demerit period, 159 TINs were issued.
“Police are on Canberra’s roads targeting speeding motorists,” Acting Station Sergeant Wills said.
“When you speed, you have less time to slow down and the harder you hit.”
He said that with students now back at school, drivers were reminded that 40km/h speed limits were once again in effect in school zones between 8am and 4pm.
“We are going into another school year so I want to stress when driving in or near a school zone, drivers stick to the sign-posted speed limit and stay alert,” Acting Station Sergeant Wills said.
He said that in 2018, ACT Policing issued 586 TINs in school zones.
“Children are some of our most vulnerable road users and we want to ensure their safety travelling to and from school,” he said.
“Speeding is a choice. You might think it’s only a little bit over but it could change your life forever.”
He said speeding motorists would be targeted this month as part of the joint road safety campaign between ACT Policing and the Justice and Community Safety Directorate.
This campaign forms part of the ACT Road Safety Strategy 2011-2020 which prioritises a Vision Zero approach to road safety.
