The Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT) is to host a two-day forum in March on renewable and sustainable energy for the ACT.
Canberra ZeroCO2 is the CIT’s first venture of its kind.
In a statement, CIT said the ZeroCO2 Renewable Energy & Sustainability Hackathon would showcase leading industry and academic experts as they discuss key issues facing climate change, the environment and community.
The CIT said speakers would outline the issues, the technological responses and the applications that individuals could adopt in their own lives and at work.
“As the national leader in renewable energy generation, Canberra is on track to transition to 100 per cent renewable energy by 2020,” the CIT said.
“In response to the growing social and environmental concerns about the impact of climate change, further plans have been developed to reduce the ACT’s total carbon emissions to net zero by 2045.”
It said achieving this would require a dramatic change in consumer habits as well as new innovative solutions to taper off the Territory’s reliance on fossil fuels in the energy intensive transport sector and natural gas in the domestic and commercial sectors.
Speakers are expected to focus on traditional renewable energy and battery storage; climate change challenges; renewable batteries; large scale wind generation and storage; careers in the wind industry and practical applications for commercial buildings.
Also to be considered is the EVOenergy and CIT Hydrogen Pilot; micro-grids and communities; managing grid ramping challenges and sustainable buildings.
