China’s most competitive Public Service examination in half a decade has taken place, with only one candidate in 95 likely to be successful.
The State Administration of Civil Service said there were more than 1.4 million applications, with 1.3 million qualified to take the test — a decrease from last year’s 1.65 million.
However, only 14,500 posts are to be filled for 75 Central Government Departments and 20 Sub-Departments — a decrease of 50 per cent from the recruitment numbers for this year.
Professor at the Chinese Academy of Governance, Wang Yukai said the drop in national Public Service admissions by such a large margin was the result of reforms both in the Communist Party and in State institutions.
“The total number of posts is restrained due to a reshuffle of Central Government Departments, which has resulted in the shrinkage of the number of recruits,” Professor Wang said.
He said the admission rate this year was the lowest in five years, with many posts being contested by thousands of applicants.
President of Huatu.com, an Agency providing Public Service–related services in China, Li Manqing said a position in the Meteorological Bureau in Huizhou, Guangdong Province, had received 4,040 applications.
“This seems to be the hottest position,” Mr Li said.
“They appear randomly in the national exam each year, usually because they have lenient requirements and fewer limitations.”
