Film: The Equalizer 3
Director: Antoine Fuqua, Sony Pictures
There are no borders when it comes to being fair-minded. Academy Award-winner Denzel Washington (Training Day, Glory, Cry Freedom) is back on the big screen for a third round of dishing out harsh justice as former government agent-turned-vigilante Richard McCall.
This action thriller directed by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, Olympus Has Fallen) is a sequel to The Equalizer 2, and the final installment of The Equalizer trilogy, which is loosely based on the television series of the same name by Michael Sloan and Richard Lindheim.
The third film seemingly pits Robert McCall (Washington) against the Italian mafia as he attempts to enjoy a getaway in Italy. He finds himself surprisingly at home in the south, but discovers his friends are under the control of local crime bosses. As events turn deadly, McCall knows what he has to do: become his friends’ protector by taking on the mafia.
Since giving up his life as a government assassin, he has struggled to reconcile the horrific things he’s done in the past and finds a strange solace in serving lawfulness on behalf of the oppressed.
Washington reprises his role as McCall with Dakota Fanning appearing on-screen with him again since Man on Fire (2004). With the help of a young CIA agent Emma Collins (Dakota Fanning, I Am Sam, The Runaways, Uptown Girls), Robert unleashes his past self to protect his new friends.
Washington’s performance resonates so much with audiences. He and Fanning have impressive onscreen chemistry. As Fuqua points out: “it just doesn’t happen that often where you see a young actor or actress grow up in front of you, and see an icon like Mr. Washington in a role together.”
“So, every day when I was filming them, he [Washington] would turn to me sometimes and smile and go like, ‘She’s a grownup now.’ He would just laugh about it. So, it was like a father-daughter relationship. Really sweet.”
