New pedestrian crossings, wider footpaths and more plants are coming to parts of Lonsdale Street in Braddon with construction on the City Renewal Authority project now underway.
Deputy Chief Executive of the Authority, Craig Gillman said the works were part of the Braddon streetscapes project to make the area safer, easy to access and more enticing to visitors.
“This project will build on what people know and love about Braddon,” Mr Gillman said.
“From landscaping and street furniture to better pram and wheelchair access, the upgrades will encourage more people to enjoy Braddon’s retail shops, cafes, bars, and restaurants,” he said.
“It’s about enhancing Braddon as an eclectic, creative and inclusive hub in the city for the years to come.”
Mr Gillman said work would begin at the southern end of Lonsdale Street, where new lighting, plants, paving and a centre median were being added.
He said the Lonsdale Street upgrades included a Girrawheen Street intersection upgrade, featuring two pedestrian crossings; two new mid-block pedestrian crossings on Lonsdale Street; and median works at the City Centre end of Lonsdale Street, near the Cooyong Street intersection.
“New landscape elements will be installed at these locations, including new paving, plantings, lighting, street furniture, new bike racks and bins,” the Deputy Chief Executive said.
“The Braddon streetscapes project will also improve pedestrian safety and access at the Mort and Elouera and Street intersection,” he said.
“The community will be asked for feedback on proposed intersection upgrades in mid-2023.”
