City Services is calling for community feedback on proposals to rebuild the Mugga Lane recycling facility and establish a food waste facility in Hume.
Issuing the call, the Environment, Planning and Sustainable Development Directorate said feedback would be open until 5 June and would inform a draft Environmental Impact Statements (EIS) for the new Materials Recovery Facility and Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) facility.
“We would like to hear from local residents and community members who may be impacted by the proposed facilities,” City Services said.
“This early engagement process will help ensure relevant issues are reflected in the draft EISs and can be addressed accordingly.”
It said that since December last year, when the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) was destroyed by a fire, Canberra’s household and commercial recycling material had been processed in Sydney and Victoria.
City Services said approximately 229 tonnes per day was being transported out of Canberra, an average of nine trucks per day.
“This is unsustainable in the long term,” the Directorate said.
“The design, construction and operation of a new MRF, located on the same site as the existing MRF as well as utilising the adjoining block on Recycling Road in the Hume Resource Recovery Estate, is proposed,” it said.
“The new MRF will be delivered as a priority and designed to have an increased processing capacity of up to approximately 115,000 tonnes per year.”
City Services said the design, construction and operation of a FOGO processing facility on John Cory Road in the Hume Resource Recovery estate was also being proposed.
It said this would be a new facility as there was currently no FOGO processing facility in the ACT and FOGO material collected as part of the Belconnen pilot was currently processed at Corkhill Bros at the Mugga Lane Resource Management Centre.
