The Australia and New Zealand School of Government (ANZSOG) has launched a new academic position with a focus on improving New Zealand’s public sector leadership.
The New Zealand Prime Minister’s ANZSOG Chair in Public Service Ethics and Integrity will be based in Wellington and will encompass a focus on integrity and ethical conduct.
ANZSOG Board Chair and New Zealand State Services Commissioner, Peter Hughes (pictured) announced the new position, describing it as a “leadership role that has real potential for the Public Service”.
“The Chair will focus on principles, values and behaviours in the Public Service,” Mr Hughes said.
He said the teaching and research would be done alongside Government Agencies in New Zealand and Australia.
“Public sector leaders must build and sustain relationships of trust and confidence so they can deliver on the reform agendas ahead of us — and ANZSOG has a crucial role in this,” Mr Hughes said.
The new position, created in partnership with Victoria University of Wellington, provides ANZSOG with an increased presence in New Zealand, and underlines the importance of ethics and integrity to public administration that provides benefits for the public.
Dean and Chief Executive of ANZSOG, Professor Ken Smith said the increased demands on modern public services made ANZSOG’s role more crucial than ever, and it would continue to evolve to meet the needs of the public sector.
“While our activities have changed over time, and will continue to do so, our focus has not — we will always aim to lift the quality of public sector leadership in Australia and New Zealand,” Professor Smith said.
“Our investment in positions such as this helps to create better public services and will benefit the communities we all serve.”
The position will require the successful applicant to conduct research, with an emphasis on topics relevant to ANZSOG’s mission, including public administration, strategic public management and public policy.
