Fire & Rescue NSW (FRNSW) has set wheels in motion for its annual charity ride to raise money for burns victims with road cyclists departing from the Snowy Mountains last Monday (27 March).
Kicking off the 400in4 Charity Ride, FRNSW said riders were looking to cover over 400km throughout the week to raise money for the Burns Unit at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead.
“This year, the ride will start in Jindabyne for the first time, with firefighters putting their bodies to the test whilst riding through the rugged landscape of the Kosciuszko National Park, knowing that whatever pain they experience during the ride will be nothing compared to what burns victims endure,” FRNSW said.
“This will be the 18th consecutive year the ride has taken place, with more than $1m raised so far to aid burns patients,” it said.
“The original concept was to cycle 400km’s in four days to raise money, with firefighters promoting safety messages along the way to local schools.”
FRNSW said this year’s ride included a Beat the Burn fundraising challenge – which began in 2021 due to COVID-19 restrictions – so riders could take part on a stationary bike at home or with friends to see how many kilometres they could clock up over the five days.
It said the event would also feature a unique challenge in which Shoalhaven firefighter, Rob Mason, would run against the road cyclists in a ‘two wheels v two feet challenge’ on the final day of riding this Friday (31 March).
