The Sydney Opera House and Taronga Zoo are gearing up for Vivid Sydney, announcing the line-up of their music, art and cultural events.
Head of Contemporary Music at the Opera House, Ben Marshall revealed the full line-up the Opera House’s centrepiece contemporary music event, Vivid LIVE 2023, taking place from 26 May to 17 June.
“Transforming the Opera House inside and out, Vivid LIVE 2023 forms part of Vivid Sydney’s Music program and will feature over 45 artists, including 19 international artists, six Australian exclusives, three orchestral collaborations and four party collectives, presented all across the world-famous building,” Mr Marshall said.
“The Vivid LIVE program will showcase a curated series of Australian premieres, exclusives and bespoke projects celebrating iconic and ambitious artists that defy expectation and break new ground.”
He said the line-up included Cat Power, reinterpreting the moment Bob Dylan went electric; Devonté Hynes going classical with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra in his only Australian appearance; and Jaguar Jonze’s unique one-off presentation of The Art of Broken Pieces,
Mr Marshall said Vivid LIVE 2023 headline performers included Budjerah, Weyes Blood, Thundercat, Becca Hatch, Sleaford Mods, Birdz & Fred Leone and many others.
Executive Director of Taronga Zoo, Simon Duffy said a brand-new line-up of captivating installations and lanterns inspired by Australia’s rare and miraculous wildlife would light up Taronga Zoo during the festival.
“Running for 18 unforgettable nights this year’s Wild Lights at Taronga has been inspired by ancient and present wisdom of the oldest continuing culture on the planet and will see Australia’s unique wildlife be transformed into a spectacle of light never seen before,” Mr Duffy said.
“With a strong focus on caring for Country and driving change, this year’s Wild Lights will debut a variety of new breathtaking lanterns that shine a light on some of the country’s most iconic species, such as the emu, possum, echidna, dingo, platypus, kangaroo and koala and the landscapes they call home,” he said.
“These never-before-seen captivating light art sculptures have been created by cutting-edge Aboriginal artist Nathan Peckham of Yurana Creative and is a collaboration between precinct director Nicholas Tory and his technical and creative team at Ample Projects.”
