MALAYSIA
The Malaysian Government has approved 65,000 new Public Service jobs to be created this year “to achieve institutional needs and demands in the civil sector”.
Chief Secretary to the Government, Dr Tan Sri Ali Hamsa said the additional public sector workers were needed because there had been an increase in the country’s population.
“Departments that require an additional workforce are the Education Ministry, Police and the Fire and Rescue Departments,” Dr Ali said.
“Some people say we don’t need 1.6 million Civil Servants, but only 430,000.”
He said the Malaysian system is different to that of the US, where the public sector is fixed, and pension and appointments are made through the Public Service Commission.
Dr Ali said Prime Minister, Najib Razak had already made clear there was to be no trimming of the Public Service.
“I advise Civil Servants to help the Government share the nation’s policy on social media,” Dr Ali said.
“More fake news is being spread, instead of stories about the nation’s achievements.”
He said PS employees should help the Government deliver good messages to the people.
“If 100 people share the nation’s accomplishments via WhatsApp or any social media platform, a lot of people will know about the Government’s achievements,” Dr Ali said.
Malaysia already has one of the highest ratios of PS employees to population in the world.
The country goes to the polls on 9 May.
