The Department of Planning and Environment (DPE) is encouraging people across the State to get their hands dirty this weekend for National Tree Day (31 July).

Encouraging the community to be involved to help create a greener, cooler and more liveable future, the Department said National Tree Day was established in 1996 by Planet Ark and had grown into Australia’s largest community tree-planting event.

“The initiative encourages everyone to volunteer their time, get their hands dirty and get involved in tree-planting community events, greening our city along the way,” DPE said.

“As part of our partnership with Planet Ark, all trees planted on National Tree Day in Greater Sydney will get us closer to reaching our goal of planting one million trees across the city by the end of 2022,” it said.

“Our partners, Greening Australia and Landcare NSW, other Government Agencies and Councils across NSW have joined in and organised fun and exciting events around Greater Sydney and NSW.”

DPE said school Tree Day events would be held on Friday (29 July) and community events on Sunday to celebrate National Tree Day.

It said that on Sunday, Parramatta locals could join Landcare NSW and the City of Parramatta to help restore a creekline and create habitat for birds and other wildlife.

“This is a family-friendly event with Australian Wildlife Displays, face painting, live music and a coffee van,” the Department said.

“You’ll even have the option to take a free tree to plant in your yard!”

Meanwhile in Canley Heights, DPE said 6,000 trees would be planted along the Orphan School Creek Corridor to assist in increasing tree canopy and creating habitat for local wildlife.

“We encourage everyone to plant trees whether it’s in your backyard or on your balcony,” it said.

“More trees mean more privacy, more shade and cleaner air.”
