Safe Work Australia has announced that its updated workplace management guide is now available.

The updated guide includes information on working on or near public roads.

In a statement accompanying the guide, Safe Work Australia said that when managing traffic on a public road, there were actions workers should take to ensure the safety of themselves and the public.

“This could include installation of barriers and warning devices to ensure workers and vehicles stay separated,” the Agency said.

“The guide is supported by specific guidance material on traffic management for shopping centres, construction workplaces, warehouses and events, as well as an information sheet for small businesses and workers.”

It said traffic management was the planning and control of traffic from one location to another.

“It is the organisation, arrangement, guidance and control of both stationary and moving traffic, including pedestrians, cyclists and all types of vehicles,” Safe Work Australia said.

“Traffic management focuses on creating and managing an orderly and efficient movement of persons and goods, creating a safe environment for all users.”

It said traffic in and around the workplace could pose significant health and safety risks.

“If traffic is uncontrolled or not appropriately planned, it may collide with a person, structure, object or other vehicle or machine. Traffic collisions can lead to significant injuries and fatalities for both the driver or operator and any other person in the vicinity,” the statement said.
