The Productivity Commission has begun the release of its latest report on public services, providing a report card on the equity, effectiveness and efficiency of Government services across Australia.

Chair of both the Productivity Commission and the Commission’s Steering Committee, Michael Brennan said the annual Report on Government Services (RoGS) looked at a broad range of indicators relating to the cost, quality and timeliness of services covering education; justice; community services; health; emergency management; and housing and homelessness.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of more timely data,” Mr Brennan said.

“While much of the data in this edition reports on performance for part of 2020, there are some areas where this was not the case and data continue to lag,” he said.

“Of particular concern are services for mental health, where much of the annual administrative data for national reporting were only available to mid‑2019.”

He said that while Government was adapting policies and programs more quickly, data developments to monitor the changes needed to keep pace.

Mr Brennan said the Commission’ report covered 17 services and was being released in seven parts until 2 February.

He said some parts of the RoGS Report were now available and covered approaches to performance reporting, community services, housing and homelessness, justice, and emergency management.

A Part covering Health, is scheduled to be released on 28 January and a Part covering child care, education and training, on 2 February.

The Commission’s Report so far can be accessed at this PS News link, with new releases to appear on the same site.
