Posties deliver security message

Australia Post has confirmed that no postal worker will be forced to accept a redundancy as part of the temporary changes to the postal service it has made in response to COVID-19.

Group Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Australia Post, Christine Holgate said the organisation had requested temporary changes to its Regulations to enable it to offer community services and remain sustainable while managing the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic.

“Unfortunately there has been a range of false claims made about the temporary changes to our Regulations,” Ms Holgate said.

“We are not forcing 2,000 of our valued posties into redundancies,” she said.

“There are no plans to cut posties’ rates of pay.”

She said temporary changes to letter delivery would only happen in metro areas and allowed Australia Post to redeploy some of its posties to where their help was needed most – in parcel processing and delivery.

“We will still require posties to deliver letters,” she said.

“The shift to online retail has dramatically increased during COVID, meaning that many Australian consumers and small businesses now rely on Australia Post to get their product to their customers as their main channel of business.”

Ms Holgate said that due to early expressions of interest she was confident that a large portion of the Australia Post workforce would want to transition to “the growth area of the business”.
