Call for Canberrans to care for water

Icon Water has launched a new awareness campaign to educate and encourage Canberrans to reduce their water use during dry conditions this summer.

The water conservation campaign is being supported by the ACT Government and the Queanbeyan Palerang Regional Council.

Managing Director Icon Water, Ray Hezkial said that while the ACT had a secure water supply, dry conditions were expected to continue over the summer, putting pressure on the system due to low rainfall and high demand.

“We can’t make it rain but we can work together, change our habits and help secure our water supply while conditions are challenging,” Mr Hezkial said.

“It’s also a timely reminder that while we are not in water restrictions, we have had permanent water conservation measures in place in the ACT and Queanbeyan since 2010.”

He said the measures set out rules around garden and lawn watering, pool filling, cleaning with water and other water uses.

“Reducing our water use will help to ease pressure on our dam water levels and will also help us to save energy, money and the environment,” he said.

Minister for the Environment and Heritage, Mick Gentlemen said the ‘Care for Water’ campaign called on Canberrans to make a “personal promise to save water in whatever way they can”.

“It could be as simple as investing in a water saving trigger nozzle for your hose, fixing a leaking tap or taking a shorter shower,” Mr Gentleman said.

“If we all do a little and become more conscious about the way we use water now, our actions can help delay the need for temporary water restrictions in the future,” he said.

“To care for water in Canberra, I pledge to have 4-minute showers, turn off the tap when I brush my teeth and wash my clothes with a full load.”
