DTA declares Digital Award winners

Geoscience Australia’s Digital Earth Australia Team which won the Australian Government Digital Award for Outstanding Digital Platform of the Year.

The winners of the Australian Government Digital Awards for 2019 have been announced by the Digital Transformation Agency (DTA) in Canberra.

The awards recognise excellence in Government digital products, services, partnerships and individuals across seven categories and were presented at a ceremony following DTA’s inaugural Digital Summit.

Four awards were presented for outstanding innovations, with the honours taken by the Department of Health, Geoscience Australia (GA), the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science and the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads.

The Department of Health won its award in the category of ‘Outstanding digital product or service’ for helping Australians make informed choices about their aged care by creating a new website for senior Australians and their carers.

Geoscience Australia’s award was in the ‘Outstanding government platform’ category for its hybrid cloud platform, Digital Earth Australia which exploits satellite imagery of Australia.

GA partnered with the National Computational Infrastructure, Data61 and Amazon Web Services to develop the platform which allows users to view, download, transform, and integrate with other data to derive new insight into Australia’s dynamic landscape.

The Department of Industry, Innovation and Science won its award in the category of Outstanding use of emerging technology’, for ‘VeRA’ its venture capital reporting and analytics system.

Queensland’s Department of Transport and Main Roads took out the ‘Outstanding digital methodology or approach’ category for its TMR digital incubator which is helping prepare the Department for a digital-first future.

Two awards for excellence in partnerships were also presented with one going to a collaboration of seven APS entities that created ‘Lifechecks’ to encourage people over 45 to reflect on their health, finances, work and social life in the context of planning for a longer life and the second going to Treasury and the Australian Taxation Office for ‘eInvoicing’ with the New Zealand Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment.

A final award for the ‘2019 Digital Champion’ was presented to the ex-Allied Health Officer at the ACT Government, Sandra Cook who has driven the adoption of a new Digital Health Strategy for the Territory which has moved ACT Health away from piecemeal investment to a coherent joined-up plan delivering lasting benefits and improvements across the sector.
