Ginninderry’s electric cars on a charge

Ginninderry’s first electric vehicle charging station has been launched.

Minister for Climate Change and Sustainability, Shane Rattenbury welcomed the move saying it was an important step in the ACT’s Transition to Zero Emissions Vehicle Action Plan which was unveiled in April.

“The charging station at Strathnairn will be the first ‘fast charger’ installed for West Belconnen and the first of several public charging stations planned for the Ginninderry area,” Mr Rattenbury said.

“There are now 12 ActewAGL charging stations in the ACT from Belconnen all the way to Greenway in the south of Canberra.”

He said the network included three rapid chargers and nine fast chargers which were all publicly available for all electric vehicle makes and models.

Noting that the Ginninderry development had mandated electric vehicle charging capability for all homes within its first display village, the Minister said that having a wide and easily accessible network of charging stations would encourage Canberrans to invest in electric vehicles.

“Electric vehicles cause less air and noise pollution, have lower running costs and don’t incur any stamp duty,” Mr Rattenbury said.

“They also receive a 20 per cent discount on registration fees.”

He said he was working on a range of initiatives under the ACT’s Transition to Zero Emissions Vehicle Action Plan, including transitioning the ACT Government fleet to zero emissions vehicles by spending $450,000 to install electric vehicle charging points for the fleet across the region.
